Lostener Request - Slipstream

In this episode Adam and Mark, at the request of long time lostener Baron Von Borg, dive head first into the 1989 b-grade craptacular mess that is Luke Sykwalker (Mark Hamill) from Star Wars, come back movie – Slipstream.

In the future, natural disasters (earthquakes, floods) have ravaged Earth, leaving a world where pockets of communities live within canyons while a violent wind known as the "slipsteam" is the only means of transport, via airplanes. Matt Owens the poor man’s Snake Plisskin played by Bill Paxton is a nomadic bounty hunter who kidnaps a prisoner Byron played by Bob Peck of two violent law officers, one of which is Luke Skywalker,  so he can claim the bounty for himself. Traveling across the wind swept landscape, Matt and Byron become best mates and  are relentlessly pursued by the officers, and Matt finds Byron isn't what he appears to be (he’s a robot) as they travel from community to community and encounter pockets of strange societies that live beyond the slipstream lead by Sir Ben Kingsley and Hagrid.

Slipstream from the Studio el obscenito VHS vault

Unfortunately, the film has its problems. The plot suffers from some cheesy moments, the music is overbearingly loud, and while it is well orchestrated and very majestic, it's often a bit too majestic for what's going on. There are also some long scenes that could have been shortened or even cut to the benefit of the film. Not to say it's BAD, it's just that half of it is 10-minute montages of gliders flying around. However, the performances by Hamill and the Peck the convict save it from all of the WEIRD choices made by the director and scriptwriter. For example...is this an action movie, or a story of a man's journey of discovery? I don't know, but love scenes in museums with montages (again) of stuffed animals with quick cuts to long focuses on Christmas lights don't give me any better of an idea. Still, it's while just to see Hamill looking cool. Director Steven Lisberger, who did Tron, stated that this movie is like a conventional road movie, but instead of cars, people are in airplanes. Says it all really!!

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 34 - Mockbuster Video

Episode 34

Mockbuster Video

In this episode Adam and Mark dive head first in to the mystical world of the mockbuster. A Mockbuster is a movie created with the intention of exploiting the publicity of another major motion picture with a similar title or subject. Mockbusters are often made with a low budget and quick production to maximize profit.

Mockbusters often use a title with a similar-sounding name to the mainstream feature it intends to piggy-back upon. For instance, the 2006 mockbuster Snakes on a Train traded on the publicity surrounding the theatrically released Snakes on a Plane. Besides the aforementioned film, The Asylum has also released The Land That Time Forgot, Transmorphers, AVH: Alien vs. Hunter, The Da Vinci Treasure, Battle of Los Angeles, Atlantic Rim and Paranormal Entity.

Mockbusters have also had legal complications with false advertising. They supposedly tweak the plot lines and the titles just enough to skirt legal trouble and yet ride on the publicity of major blockbusters. Until the Hobbit case, mockbuster production houses have been able to achieve soundalike titling to such an extent that even actors in the movies have been confused about which movie they are starring in

Because mockbusters are deliberately similar to more famous movies, some movie studios have sued mockbuster studios for allegedly tricking consumers into renting or purchasing the wrong movie through intentionally deceptive marketing. Warner Bros. similarly sued The Asylum over their release of Age of the Hobbits. The judge ruled in favour of Warner Bros., writing that "There is substantial likelihood that consumers will be confused by Age Of Hobbits and mistakenly purchase the film intending to purchase The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Wastelands Idiot box - Demolition Man

In this episode Adam and Mark continue to pay homage to the idiot box Monday night movie. This week they caught the 1993 American science fiction action film directed by Marco Brambilla in his directorial debut - Demolition Man. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, and Nigel Hawthorne. Stallone is John Spartan, a risk-taking police officer, who has a reputation for causing destruction while carrying out his work. After a failed attempt to rescue hostages from evil crime lord Simon Phoenix, they are both sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in 1996.

Simon Phoenix, is revived for a parole hearing well into the 21st century. Revived into a society free from crime, Phoenix resumes his murderous rampage, and no one can stop him. John Spartan. In 2032, the former cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara have merged into peaceful, utopian San Angeles. Unable to stop him with their non-violent solutions, the police release Spartan to help recapture Phoenix. Now after 36 years, Spartan has to adapt himself to the future society he has no knowledge about.

The story makes allusions to works including Aldous Huxley's 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World, and HG Wells's The Sleeper Awakes. The film earned a worldwide total of $159 million, and was considered a successful film for Stallone.

Factoids

  • Wesley Snipes' kicks and punches sometimes look lurchy and awkward. Snipes is an accomplished black belt in real life, and his kicks and punches were so fast that they blurred on-camera. Hence the producers asked him to slow them down.

  • Sylvester Stallone wanted Simon Phoenix to be played by Jackie Chan. Chan declined, since Asian audiences don't like the idea of actors who have always played heroes suddenly playing evil characters.

  • Sandra Bullock replaced Lori Petty after a few days filming. Petty left due to creative differences.

  •  In Kuwait, the Arabic title was "Rambo The Destroyer". Since Rambo movies were very popular, the distributor thought associating Sylvester Stallone to Rambo in the title would sell more tickets.

Wastelands Idiot box - Escape from LA

In this episode Adam and Mark pay homage to the idiot box Monday night movie. This week they caught John Carpenter's 1996 follow up to Escape from New York - Escape From LA. The year is 2013 and Snake Plissken is back but this time it's L.A., which through the agency of earthquakes has become an island of the damned. But something has gone wrong in this new moral order, because the President's daughter has absconded to L.A. with a detonation device, and Snake is commandeered to retrieve it. But just below the surface there is a coiled Snake ready to strike.

Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is back, in this 1996 sequel to John Carpenter's Escape from New York.

2013 America has become even more dystopian than it was in the earlier film, having been taken over by a theocratic fundamentalist Christian President (Cliff Robertson).

An airplane has crash landed into the penal colony/no man's land/landfill/roach motel that is Los Angeles post-The Big One.

It had The President's Daughter Utopia (A. J. Langer) on it, and now she has sided with Cuervo Jones, taking the film's MacGuffin super weapon with her.

The President drafts Snake into eliminating her and retrieving said MacGuffin. His reward, should he succeed, will be the antidote to a virus that has been injected into him.

And so he enters the fortified and barbwired city of Los Angeles, a prison with no guards and precious little order. He makes his way through the slums (it's all slums), he gains and loses allies.

Also Starring Steve Buscemi - Map to the Stars Eddie, Pam Grier - Hershe Las Palmas, Stacy Keach  - Cmdr. Malloy, Peter Fonda – Pipeline, Bruce Campbell - Surgeon General of Beverly Hills

Idiot Box- Double Impact

In this episode Adam and Mark pay homage to the idiot box Monday night movie. This week they caught the1991 American action film written and directed by Sheldon Lettich, and written, produced by and starring Jean-Claude van Damme in a dual role as Chad and Alex Wagner. The film marks Van Damme's third collaboration with director Sheldon Lettich (Bloodsport and Lionheart) and second collaboration with Bolo Yeung (the first being Bloodsport in 1988)

Wastelands Idiot box - Double Impact

Alex and Chad are twins who are separated as babies when their parents are killed by a crime boss. Twenty-five years later, they join forces to exact revenge on the people who killed their family.

Van Damme was reportedly paid $600,000 for the movie. Wanting to breakaway from the martial arts movie genre he had become so popularly known for, he hoped playing the dual role of Chad/Alex would change his image and help him do just that. "[Alex] is violent and [Chad] is not, so audiences [will] see the contrast in my work." Prior to the films release, he had told the Los Angeles Times: "If I stay in martial arts pictures people will get tired of my films.

Director Sheldon Lettich co wrote the script with Van Damme. Inspiration was taken from Alexandre Dumas' The Corsican Brothers; an 1844 novella about twins separated at birth, who find each other in adulthood. Lettich later recalled the concept of Van Damme playing twins "was so successful that other producers wanted him to repeat it." (TimecopMaximum RiskReplicant) "Even though it meant a lot more work for Jean-Claude, he enjoyed the challenge of playing two distinctly different characters, showcasing a dark and a more light-hearted side in the same movie."

Masters of the Universe - The Motion Picture

In this episode Adam and Mark take a slight detour from the barbarian theme with the Sci fi fantasy film adaption of the classic 1980s saturday morning cartoon series ‘Masters of the Universe’. Produced by the notorious Cannon films in 1987, for a princely sum of $22 million, Masters of the Universe the motion picture is one part Star Wars, one part Flash Gordon two parts cheese. and even though it missed the mark at the time and was generally canned by fans and critics alike, it still features the mighty Dolph Lundgren as He Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Looking at it in 2020, the film kinda stands alone as a fun nostalgic trip back in time to the marvellous 80’s.

Episode 27

The Barbarians

In this episode Adam and Mark dive back into the b-grade wormhole of Conan the barbarian inspired sword and sorcery flicks. This week adventure is the 1987 Cannon action comedy - The Barbarians. Directed by the infamous Robert Deodato who was responsible for Cannibal Holocaust in 1980.  Featuring David and Peter Paul as Twin barbarians. It's just like Conan but with two Conan's and everybody's favourite Hills have Eyes creep and wastelands favourite Michael Berryman as the appropriately named Dirt-master and George Eastman.

Twin barbarians seek revenge from the warlord who massacred their tribe and captured them when they were small children. It's completely campy and it doesn't take itself seriously for a moment. Starring former professional wrestling duo the Barbarian Brothers, these actors -- which is a loose description of what they are doing on screen -- look like they are having a ball filming, and it's hard not to share in the fun. It really is a must-see Italian exploitation flick.

Highlights no explanations given – you’ll just have to watch it – Bear creature, man cry, erection dragon and oily walnuts!

Commando (1985) A retired Special Forces colonel tries to save his daughter, who was abducted by his former subordinate.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her teenage son, John Connor, from a more advanced and powerful cyborg.

EPIC handshake

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 23 - TROMA - Double feature

WASTELANDS - An Australian B-grade, Punk Rock, Street Trash online radio show Hosted by long time partners in slime Adam (085c3n3) Obscene and Mark-O -Mark, pondering punk oddities, trashy treasures, street levelness, life, culture and stuff.

In this episode Adam and Mark take on two Troma classics where the schools teach readin’, writin' and radiation! and the beaches have become battlefields... the waves are a war zone! Listeners and losteners brace yourselves for Class of Nuke 'Em High (1986) and Surf Nazis Must Die (1987).

Class of Nuke 'Em High (1986) - When Warren and Chrissy notice some strange things happening around their high school, when the pupils start acting and looking strange after buying contaminated drugs from a nuclear plant worker. They begin to suspect that something is going on at the nuclear plant next door. Though the plant officials deny that there are any problems, Crissy gives birth to a bloodthirsty mutant who immediately begins eating everyone in the school. Will Warren and Chrissy be able to stop their killer kid?

Factoids

  • The Monster is never seen in a full shot as the entire costume was never finished. They only had bits and pieces that were used as a puppet (hands, face, legs etc.)

  • When Dewey lands on the pavement in the opening scene, the first man to walk up to him is a shocked, bearded man, played by Troma co-founder and producer Michael Herz in his only on-screen performance ever.

  •  When Chrissy goes to the hospital, you can hear over the loudspeaker "Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard". These are the names Moe, Larry, and Curly take in certain episodes of the Three Stooges. - From the short Men in Black; which was released September 28th, in 1934.

  •   Spike (Bob Prichett) has mop strings hanging from his left shoulder. Certainly a reference to Toxie.

Surf Nazis Must Die (1987) - When the son of a gun-wielding woman is murdered by neo-Nazi surf punks in the post-apocalyptic future, his Mama hunts them down for some bloodthirsty revenge. Possibly the best title ever... An earthquake leaves the California coastline in ruins and reduces the beaches to a state of chaos.

Surf Nazis Must Die Australian VHS cover

A group of neo-Nazis led by Adolf (Brenner), the self-proclaimed "Führer of the new beach", takes advantage of the resulting chaos by fighting off several rival surfer gangs to seize control of the beaches. Meanwhile, an oil well worker named Leroy (Harden) is killed by the surf Nazis while jogging on the beach. Leroy's mother, "Mama" Washington (Neely), devastated by the loss of her son, vows revenge.  After arming herself with a handgun and grenades, she breaks out of her retirement home and exacts vengeance on the Surf Nazis. For, amongst other things, the excellent synth soundtrack by Jon McCallum, for having a character called "smeg",for the hilariously obvious shock shots of the sky, surf and the bunker area, and for the immortal line "taste some of mommas home cooking Adolf", this films deserves 10 out of 10.

Factoids

Surf Nazis Must Die was criticised by reviewers as boring and hard to follow, and its acting, dialogue, and camerawork were widely panned. Janet Maslin wrote "Not even the actors' relatives will find this interesting." Roger Ebert stated that he walked out of the film after 30 minutes.

Episode 22

Troma - The Toxic Avenger

In this episode Adam and Mark take a short stroll through Tromaville, the home of New Jersey's greatest hero and location of Troma's greatest contribution to cinema - The Toxic Avenger. Join them as they discuss this genuinely funny poke at superheroes and monster movies, delivered with a healthy dose of cheap gags, splattery special effects, and T&A.

The Toxic Avenger, set in Tromaville, NJ, is about Melvin Ferd, a meek nerd, who works as a janitor at a health club. While he is of no threat to anyone, psychotic health club patrons: Bozo, Slug, Wanda, and Julie bully the kid because he doesn’t look pretty like them, and isn’t as smart as they are.

When the four aren’t tormenting little Melvin, they are busy screwing each other, or running over little boys on bicycles with their bitchen Camero; squishing their little heads. It’s the only way Bozo is able to relieve the stress of his life.

Eventually, the the four manage to humiliate Melvin to the point where he jumps out of a second story window at the health club, and into a barrel of toxic waste conveniently sitting open on a flatbed truck in front of the club. The toxic waste sets Melvin on fire, but also transforms him into a super-sized superhero/vigilante with a delightful voice.

Toxic crusaders

  • Look for future Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei as an extra (coming out of a shower)

  • Two less successful sequels, The Toxic Avenger Part II and The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, were filmed as one. Director Lloyd Kaufman realized that he had shot far too much footage for one film and re-edited it into two.

  • A third independent sequel was also released, titled Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.

  • An animated children's TV series spin-off, Toxic Crusaders, featured Toxie as the leader of a team of mutated superheroes who fought against evil alien polluters. The cartoon series was short-lived and quickly cancelled.

  • New Line Cinema had planned a live-action film based on the cartoon, but the project was never produced.[

  • In 2019, it was announced that Legendary Entertainment would be producing a reboot of the film, with original creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment serving as producers, and Macon Blair serving as writer and director.

TROMA - Tromeo and Juliet

In this episode Adam and Mark visit the seedy underground of Manhattan courtesy of the masters of schlock TROMA. In this masterful modern day adaption of Shakespeare’s well-loved classic Romeo and Juliet. Troma presents Tromeo and Juliet with all the body-piercing, kinky sex, and car crashes that Shakespeare wanted but never had! Join Adam, Mark, Tromeo, Juliet, and Lemmy of Motorhead as they search for climactic love, violence, and the American Way.

VHS cover

This movie is truly unique. It really captures the spirit of the play. However, like with most Troma flicks, it’s totally self aware, in your face, features taboo subjects, revels in gore and sex. There are some hilarious jokes in the credits (best credits I've seen since Hot Shots) loads of Troma in jokes as well as general satire and Shakespeare refs. There is some half decent acting, Lemmy from the house of Motorhead narration, stars the legendary Tromette Debbie Rochon and a Shakespeare plot, it is Troma at its best. Though its not the sort of film you'd watch with your mum, and will offend most people. For anybody bored with run of the mill cinema, with a wacky sense of humour you MUST SEE THIS FILM

soundtrack

Tromeo and Juliet is also notable for its soundtrack, composed of alternative rock, pop punk and heavy metal music, which helped get the film some recognition on MTV. Most bands were willing to contribute their tracks for little to no money out of respect for Troma. In return for their song "Mr. Superlove", The Ass Ponys' lead singer requested only a check from the company for $9.95, for the purpose of framing it on his wall. The CD soundtrack was released on Oglio Records on May 6, 1997 and included the following tracks:"Sacrifice" by Motörhead and other artists including: The Meatmen, Superchunk, Supernova & Sublime.

Factoids

  • James Gunn writer Guardians of the Galaxy was paid $150 for the screenplay.

  • The footage of the car flipping over is recycled for many Troma films including Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. (1990), Terror Firmer (1999), and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000).

  • Debbie Rochon has starred in over 250 movies from 1982 to 2020

  • Posters for various other Troma films are visible throughout both households.

  • Despite many claims, the film is not entirely in iambic pentameter. a line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short (or unstressed) syllable followed by one long (or stressed) syllable, for example Two households, both alike in dignity.
