Motörmonth - Mark-ö-Mark takeover - Motörhead’s first 7” release

In this episode Mark takes over for his first MARK-ö-MARK take over episode!

This is a short one about Motörhead’s first single from their first album. Released in March 1977 in the UK on Chiswick Records it is not only significant for being the first Motörhead single, it is also the first single to ever be released on 7” & 12” vinyl format simultaneously.

The single failed to chart but we don’t care. It’s a glorious greasy garage gem and the B-side City Kids is an unvarnished slice of garage rock. Check out the links below to listen and learn about this iconic single.

He does, however, correct a few misconceptions: for example, no, he did not defile a sandwich he later fed to Matlock. The germ of truth in that story, Jones admits, is that he's not shy about discussing his preferred technique for copulating with bread loaves. it's a candid window into the life of one of the original punk rockers — and Jones is frank about the inherent irony of achieving fame as a band protesting everything that fame was supposed to mean.

Wastelands Radio Show - Snack-size Episode 57 - Thundarr the Barbarian

Snack-Size Episode 57

Thundarr the Barbarian

In this snack size episode, Adam and Mark travel to a future where civilisation is cast into ruin when a runaway planet speeds between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction. where just one fights to spread peace throughout the land: He is Thundarr the Barbarian.

Thundarr the Barbarian series hit screens in 1980 from Ruby-Spears. The Production was very similar to the old Hanna-Barbera shows, but it wasn’t one. In fact Joe Ruby and Ken Spears were long time Hanna-Barbera writers of shows like Space GhostThe Herculoids, and Scooby-Doo. By 1979, the pair had branched off to create their own studio; their first series was the highly Scooby-derivative Fangface. They followed that with The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show and Heathcliff and Dingbat.

The premise for Thundarr is great :Civilization is cast into ruin when a runaway planet speeds between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction. Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn from the ashes with a savage landscape, strange creatures and a primitive sense of justice. But, one man fights to spread peace throughout the land:

Thundarr and his companions Ookla the Mok and sorceress Princess Ariel used their strength, courage and wits, plus Thundarr’s magical Sunsword, as they journeyed from village to village, liberating slaves and battling all kinds of beasts, mutants, wizards, thieves and robots.

Though the official story is that Mattel had been in development of the toy line that eventually became He Man and the Masters of the Universe since the mid-70s, there’s no denying, to my mind anyway, how much the 1983 Filmation TV series cribbed directly from Thundarr. Mattel began a comic book series prior to the cartoon…in 1981. Conan the Barbarian the movie is usually the agreed upon antecedent, but that movie came out in 1982, and there’s a lot more alien and technology in He-Man than in Conan. I’m just saying, it might be a mix.

In any case, Thundarr enjoyed only a 13 episode first season in 1980 and an 8 episode second season in 1981. 21 glorious episodes which mixed adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror into a strange mélange of magic. One of the few series of the era to attempt more complex storytelling than teenaged antics and talking dogs. And only just barely did it miss the window where action-adventure cartoons sold toys by the truckload.

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 56 - The Toxic Crusaders

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 56 - The Toxic Crusaders.jpg

Episode 56

The Toxic Crusaders

In this episode Adam and Mark revisit Tromaville and talk about the 1991 animated series and Toys aimed at children, loosely based on The Toxic Avenger films. It features Toxie, the lead character of the films leading a group of misfit superheroes who combat pollution - the Toxic Crusaders.

The Toxic Crusaders followed a trend of environmentally considerate cartoons and comics of the time, including Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Swamp Thing, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures. As this incarnation was aimed at children, Toxic Crusaders is considerably tamer than the edgy films it was based on (although it nevertheless contained many adult-oriented jokes that would go over most children's heads).

Thirteen episodes were produced and aired, with at least a few episodes airing as a "trial run" in Summer 1990 followed by the official debut on January 21, 1991.

Playmates Toys, the same company responsible for Ninja Turtles action figures, released a line of similarly styled Toxic Crusader figures in 1991. The majority of characters featured bright neon colours and glow-in-the-dark accessories. TV commercials for the figures used the tag line "They're gross, but they still get girls!" A total of nine characters as well as some rather unorthodox vehicles saw toy shelves. Similar to the Ninja Turtles' Retro mutagen Ooze, Playmates also marketed a canister of slime labeled Toxie's Toxic Waste. A toy line principally conceived by Aaronian and the design team at Troma and Pangea Corporation, some of the toys came packed with "Toxic Tips," which instructed kids how to make messes in their homes and otherwise muck up the environment.

In 2020 Super 7 released a 7 inches tall Toxie, modelled on the original Playmates figure from the classic animated series , its features multiple points of articulation, and includes a wide selection of accessories including a glow in the dark blobby.

Vintage Toys - Viewmaster

In this snack size episode, Adam and Mark take a look at a time when your little red viewer was the way to not only relive your favourite movies and tv shows, but to also see the world. The magical world of the View-Master.

View-Master is the trademark name of a line of special-format stereoscopes and corresponding View-Master "reels", which are thin cardboard disks containing seven stereoscopic 3-D pairs of small transparent colour photographs on film.

The View-Master system was introduced in 1939, four years after the advent of Kodachrome colour film made the use of small, high-quality photographic colour images practical. Tourist attraction and travel views predominated in View-Master's early lists of reels, most of which were meant to be of interest to users of all ages. In the 80s View-Master reels were directly aimed for children with reels featuring all the popular kids franchises like - Cabbage Patch Kids, Disney, Star Wars, Masters of the Universe, Transformers, Jem, Hanna Barbera Care Bears just to name a few.

Wastelands Radio Show - Episode 54.jpg

Episode 54

Star Wars Holiday Special

In This Episode Adam and Mark celebrate May the 4th with the oddest entry into the star wars filmic universe, from 1978 the Star Wars Holiday Special.

A seasonal show hastily greenlit by CBS to push merchandise and keep fans thirsty for The Empire Strikes Back, this hodgepodge production was never going to live up to the ground-breaking success of Star Wars

Starring all the big stars from the first movie the special suffered from the script was revised within an inch of its life, actors in full Wookiee attire dropping like flies on set in the LA summer heat, director David Acomba walked away after filming just a handful of scenes. George Lucas, his name pointedly wiped from the production, has not only publicly condemned the show but called for the destruction of its now strictly bootlegged existence.

The Variety segments provide us with a flamboyant, psychedelic playground for misfits and performers. A camp cooking show has Harvey Korman in drag rustling up something called Bantha Surprise, a musical number set in the Mos Eisley Cantina unites its shady patrons in a spirited act of rebellion against an Imperial-enforced curfew. For some reason Jefferson Starship perform, singing into what look like neon hot dog – and the Art Carney plays a trader on the Wookie home world of Kashyyyk. where is also secretly a member of the Rebel Alliance.

The most impressive segment though is a short animation commissioned from Nelvana, an independent studio co-founded by Clive A Smith, a frequent collaborator of the Beatles. Instructed by Lucas to mimic the style of Jean Giraud, the studio created a mini-story within the Star Wars timeline that introduced Boba Fett for the first time. The sketch, with its pop punk palette and fluid, dreamy landscapes gave the bounty hunter a dazzling entrance into the franchise that the films simply couldn’t provide.

80's Toys - ALF

In this tasty snack size episode, Adam and Mark fondly remember the cat eating Alien Life Form that is ALF and talk about the spinoffs and toys the 80’s TV show inspired.

In ALF, ALF is an alien from the planet Melmac who has arrived on planet Earth, and lands in the Tanner family's garage. On Melmac, ALF was a member of the planet's Orbit Guard. He was given the nickname "ALF", by Willie Tanner in the pilot episode. ALF was born on October 28, 1756. He is troublesome, sarcastic, and cynical. ALF is generally regarded as one of the only Melmacians to survive his home planet's cataclysm. ALF stayed at the Tanner's house, in order to stay hidden from the government, and very rarely interacted with anyone outside of the family. In an episode from the first season, "Help Me, Rhonda", Willie is able to contact ALF's friend from Melmac, Skip, and Skip offers fly by Earth to pick up ALF. ALF initially decides to go with Skip, but later changes his mind and decides he would rather stay with the Tanners instead.

alf-movie.jpg

Due to the series becoming popular with children, ALF didn't drink any alcohol after the first season, because NBC thought it made him a bad role model. ALF is also known to want to eat cats, including the Tanner family cat, Lucky, this later stopped after an episode in which ALF tried to microwave Lucky caused a child to try and microwave their own cat. Also, the episode "Try to Remember", depicted ALF using an electric mixer in a bathtub, and getting amnesia, which caused a child to attempt this and nearly electrocute himself. The episode was then edited for all future airings, with ALF slipping in the shower instead causing the amnesia.

ALF-related merchandise was sold during the show's original run, including a 1987 22-inch plush doll produced by Coleco, and a 1988 calendar with Melmac's planetary holidays, such as "Shout at a Shrub Day", prominently marked In 1987, over $250 million in ALF merchandise were sold, including $85 million worth of Coleco's dolls.

Episode 51

80’s TOYS - Masters of the Universe - Ram Man

In this episode Adam and Mark dive in to the Studio Obscenito toy box and dig out some nostalgic 1980's gold.

The Ram Man action figure was released as part of the line's second wave, and was one of the first figures of the line to break away from the construction design of the standard figures. Instead, the figure has a hollow body, allowing his legs to slide up inside his torso and clip in place. A latch on the back of his boot releases him, causing him to spring forward with a headbutting action.

206_full.jpeg

The original prototype for the figure gave Ram Man an orange tunic and red legs. The final release had a red tunic and green legs, but his original prototype colour scheme was still used on back of box listings and in a number of appearances in the franchise's other media.

Ram Man's first appearance is in the early Mattel mini-comic "He Man meets Ram Man". In this comic Ram Man is portrayed as a loner who lives on a stretch of barren land. He will attack anyone who crosses his land, believing their intention is to fight him, and although his past is not delved into it is implied he had retreated to this stretch of land after being continuously victimised by others. The story began with He- Man crossing his land, and despite stating his peace, Ram Man disbelieves him and attacks him. Left with no choice but to fight Ram Man, He-Man fights back and quickly beats him.

In the third Batch Watch Sasquatch instalment, Adam and Mark dive head first in to the world of hokey documentaries and kick off with a cracker, The Bigfoot Alien Connection Revealed. In this brain buster, the areas of Ufology and Cryptozoology come crashing together in a head on collision.

Squarely fitting in to the world of “Is it Bullshit?” this shocker revealed no connection between Bigfoot and aliens apart from eyewitnesses claims that people saw UFO's around the same time they saw Bigfoot. It's really a mix of a Bigfoot, alien, and ghost documentaries, just slapped together like some kind of Frankenstein's monster. The narrator implies that these are all possibly related, but provide no evidence.

Batch Watch Sasquatch - Part 2 - The Asylum’s Bigfoot

In this the second instalment of the Batch Watch Sasquatch experiment, Adam and Mark debrief and discuss The Asylum’s 'Bigfoot' from 2012 a Bigfoot flick that pits Danny Partridge and Greg Brady against a giant forest monster and the unlikely duo’s pledge to save the creature, which is the last of its species.

bigfoot-2012-asylum-mount-rushmore.jpeg

The cast is a veritable who’s who of 80’s pop culture. Starring Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey from Twin Peaks) , Barry Williams (Greg Brady), Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, Danny Bonaduce (Danny Partridge) , Bruce Davison (Mr Henderson from Harry and the Hendersons TV show and the director) and Howard "Johnny Fever" Hesseman (Mr Moore from 80’s sitcom Head of the Class).

The plot (if you can call it that) focuses on a concert promoter (Danny Bonaduce) having an 80's festival near Mount Rushmore and to do this he must destroy several acres of Forestland, which doesn't sit well with environmentalist and forest lover (Barry Williams). Soon the two are battling each other over the land but Bigfoot shows up and wants everyone off him home turf.

The Bigfoot here isn't the one we've all come to love but instead it has more to do with King Kong. Yes, the title creature here is a gigantic monster that runs wild just like the big ape, which is just downright stupid and silly.

Mysteries of the Unknown

In this Episode, Adam and Mark discuss their mutual love and lifelong fascination for all things unknown, supernatural and unexplained and discover that they both owned a particular series of books from their childhood back in the late seventies/ early eighties - Mysteries of the Unknown by Usborne Books. Mark had it in separate issues, which have long disappeared, But, Adam dug into the studio archives and uncovered his copy which featured all issues in one book….. and as Mark said “the memories they came flooding back!!”

From flying saucers and Sasquatch, to alien encounters and famous fakes, these classic titles trace UFOs, Ghosts and Monsters throughout history. First published in 1977, these books are for anyone who has shivered at shadowy figures in the dark, heard strange sounds in the night or felt the presence of a mysterious 'something' from the unknown.

Revisiting the pages, Adam and Mark note that these children's books were actually quite gruesome and bloody with graphic artwork, full of detailed info, interesting facts and stories on Monsters, Ghosts and UFOs. and even finishes up with a section on monsters from movies, featuring Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster, Godzilla, and Jaws to name a few.

Usborne-Monsters-Lambton-worm-werewolf.jpg

On reflection, they come to the conclusion that they had just rediscovered what could be best described as the original wastelands playbook. The collection that started them on their b grade, punk rock, street trash journey and whose influence is still evident today in who they are, what they do and what they create.
