Pick Your Kings Part 2

Mark-O-Mark’s Picks

Episode 05 Pick Your Kings

In this episode Adam and Mark discuss Mark's top five Stephen King novels and movie adaptions. Featuring a conversation focusing on his formative viewing habits and reviews on Salem’s Lot(1975), Thinner (1985), It (1986), Carrie (1974) and Pet Sematary (1983).

Salem’s Lot - Suburban vampire creepers! Writer named Ben Mears who returns to the town of Jerusalem's Lot (or 'Salem's Lot for short) in Maine, where he had lived from the age of five through nine, only to discover that the residents are becoming vampires

Novel – 1975 -It was his second published novel. In 1987 he told Phil Konstantin in The Highway Patrolman magazine: "In a way it is my favourite story, mostly because of what it says about small towns. They are kind of a dying organism right now. The story seems sort of down home to me. I have a special cold spot in my heart for it!"

Film – 1979- Director - Tobe Hooper -Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974, Poltergeist 1982, Crocodile 2000. Starring -David Soul - Ben Mears - Starsky and Hutch - Det Ken 'Hutch' Hutchinson 1975-1979. James Mason – Straker 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Captain Nemo 1954, Stanley Kubrick's Lolita Prof. Humbert 1962. Salem's Lot (also known as Salem's Lot: The Movie, Salem's Lot: The Miniseries and Blood Thirst) is a 1979 American miniseries television adaptation of the horror novel of the same name by Stephen King. Directed by Tobe Hooper and starring David Soul and James Mason. Salem's Lot combines elements of both the vampire film and haunted house subgenres of horror.

Thinner - Fake latex fat suit businessman with a gypsy curse. Obese Billy Halleck (Robert John Burke) accidentally runs over and kills a gypsy woman; he uses his court connections to get off the hook. The woman's elderly father takes revenge by placing a curse upon Halleck, one that soon has him uncontrollably losing weight to the point of emaciation.

Novel – 1984.Thinner is a 1984 novel by Stephen King, published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman. It was the last novel King released under the Richard Bachman pseudonym until the release of The Regulators in 1996, and the last released prior to Bachman being outed as being Stephen King's pseudonym. The initial hardcover release of Thinner included a fake jacket photo of "Bachman". The photo is claimed to have been taken by Claudia Inez Bachman. The actual subject of the photo is Richard Manuel, the insurance agent of Kirby McCauley, who was King's literary agent.

Film – 1996. Director - Tom Holland -Fright Night -1985, Child's Play 1988. Starring - Robert John Burke - Billy Halleck - RoboCop 3 – RoboCop 1993. A fully committed, even compelling performance by Robert John Burke can’t save this picture from itself. Hilarious cartoonish makeup and anaemically written characters are among the critical flaws in this tale of an overweight lawyer haunted by a Gypsy curse. The tone here bears similarity to the Goosebumps TV show that was popular at the time—only less scary.

It - Crazy ass demon gutter clown. A predatory monster which has the ability to transform itself into its prey's worst fears, allowing it to exploit the phobias of its victims. It mostly takes the humanoid form of a vicious but darkly comedic clown called Pennywise.

Novel – 1986 King’s 22nd book, and his 17th novel written under his own name. The story follows the experiences of seven children as they are terrorized by an evil entity that exploits the fears of its victims to disguise itself while hunting its prey. "It" primarily appears in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown to attract its preferred prey of young children.

Film – Original 1990. Director - Tommy Lee Wallace - Halloween III: Season of the Witch 1982, Fright Night Part 2 1988. Starring - Tim Curry – Pennywise - The Rocky Horror Picture Show- Dr. Frank-N-Furter 1975. The story revolves around The protagonists are The Lucky Seven, or The Losers Club, a group of outcast kids who discover Pennywise and vow to kill him by any means necessary. The series takes place over two different time periods, the first when the Losers first confront Pennywise as children in 1960, and the second when they return as adults in 1990 to defeat him a second time after he resurfaces.

Carrie - High-school bullying and psychokinetic wrath Carrie White, an unpopular friendless misfit and bullied high-school girl who uses her newly discovered telekinetic powers to exact revenge on those who torment her

Novel – 1974. King’s his first published novel, released on April 5, 1974, with an approximate first print-run of 30,000 copies. King has commented that he finds the work to be "raw" and "with a surprising power to hurt and horrify." It is one of the most frequently banned books in United States schools.[

Film – 1976. Director - Brian De Palma - The Untouchables 1987. Starring - Sissy Spacek – Carrie White  - Coal Miner's Daughter - Loretta Lynn 1980. Piper Laurie – Marget White - The Faculty - Mrs. Karen Olson 1998, Twin Peaks Catherine Martell / Mr. Tojamura 1989-1991. John Travolta – Billy  - Pulp Fiction- Vincent Vega 1994. For its first hour, Carrie is a deliriously entertaining, rising-star-studded tragicomedy. Then the prom scene hits—it will still make your blood run cold. Star Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, who plays Carrie’s violently fanatical mother, were both nominated for Oscars, an unprecedented feat for a horror movie.

Pet Sematary -Undead pets and children sometimes come back……..Sometimes. The downward spiral of a family rocked by tragedy who go to supernatural lengths to reconnect with dead loved ones

Novel – 1983. In 1979, King was a "writer-in-residence" at the University of Maine and the house he was renting was adjacent to a major road where dogs and cats were often killed by oncoming trucks. He decided to write a book based on these ideas, and that the book would be a re-telling of "The Monkey's Paw" (1902), a short story by W. W. Jacobs about parents whose son resurrects after they wish for that to happen. King has gone on record stating that of all the novels he has written, Pet Sematary is the one which genuinely scared him the most.

Film – 1989/2019 - Director - Mary Lambert - Mötley Crüe: Without You, Mötley Crüe: Without You, Janet Jackson: Nasty, Control, Madonna: Material Girl. Starring - Dale Midkiff as Louis - The Crow: Salvation - Vincent 2000. Fred Gwynne as Jud -The Munsters - Herman Munster 1964-2004. Funnier and slightly campier than you'd expect. It goes deep on afterlife themes, there are plenty of freaky moments, and scene-stealing Church is the coolest resurrected cat of all time. The Ramones recorded a song of the same name as the theme for the 1989 film adaptation. It appeared on their album Brain Drain. It was later covered by the band Starcrawler for the 2019 film.

Episode 05 – Pick Your King Part 1

Adam 085c3n3’s Picks

In this episode Adam and Mark discuss Adam’s top five movies adapted from Stephen King stories. Almost as long as that legendary master of horror Stephen King has been keeping book lovers up at night, filmmakers have been adapting his books, for decades now. Which means there have been some classics and some clunkers. Featuring a rambling conversation focusing on his formative viewing habits and pondering on Children of the Corn (1984), The Mangler (1995), Maximum Overdrive (1986), The Running Man (1987) and Sleepwalkers (1992).

Children of the Corn - A pagan cult of killer kids … Ban this sickle filth! King’s unsettling short story about a pagan cult of killer kids was originally published in Penthouse in 1977 and has so far inspired 10 screen adaptations.

Novel – 1977 issue of Penthouse, and later collected in King's 1978 collection Night Shift. Film – 1984. Director - Fritz Kiersch  - GOR 1987, Swamp Thing TV series, 1990. The Mangler - A demon possessed laundry press is depressing. It was meant to be a horror heavyweight’s team-up for the ages: writer King, director Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) and Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund — but The Mangler is about an evil laundry press and nothing could have made it work.

Novel – 1972 issue of Cavalier magazine, and later collected in King's 1978 collection Night Shift. Film – 1995. Director - Tobe Hooper -Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974, Poltergeist 1982, Crocodile 2000.Starring- Robert Englund – Bill Gartley laundry owner - Nightmare on Elm Street – Freddy Krueger Strippers vs. Werewolves - Tapper 2012, Zombie Strippers! -  Ian 2008. Maximum Overdrive - Try to survive when homicidal machines become alive - so-bad-it’s-so-good. Stephen King – that great chronicler of retro Americana – somehow made the perfect drive-in movie in his sole directorial effort: a silly, slapdash nightmare of murderous vehicles and appliances attacking hysterical patrons (including a bewildered Emilio Estevez) at a truck stop called the Dixie Boy.

Novel – Trucks" is a short story by Stephen King, first published in the June 1973 issue of Cavalier magazine, and later collected in King's 1978 collection Night Shift. Film – 1986. Director - Stephen King. Starring - Emilio Estevez – Bill - Repoman – Otto 1984, The Breakfast Club - Andrew Clark 1985, St. Elmo ’s fire - Kirby Keger 1985. Pat Hingle – Hendershot - Batman - Commissioner Gordon 1989, Hang ‘Em High - Judge Fenton 1968, Muppets form Space – General Luft 1999

The Running Man - Ladies  & Gentlemen, if you just bear with us, we are experiencing technical difficulties. The story is set in a dystopian United States between 2017 and 2019, is about a television show called The Running Man, where convicted criminal "runners" must escape death at the hands of professional killers.

Novel – First published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman in 1982 as a paperback original. Film – 1987. Director - Paul Michael Glaser - Kazaam 1996, Starsky and HutchDet. Dave Starsky 1975-1979. Peter Newkirk / Papa Bear 1965-1971.

Sleepwalkers - Werecats probably seemed like a good idea in a horror movie? No doubt the finest unintentional comedy on this list, this feline-centric original is equal parts campy and icky, never scary or funny in a clever way.

Novel – not actually novel an adaption it’s a movie written by King 1992. Film – 1992. Directed - Mick Garris - Critters 2 1988, Psycho 4: The Beginning 1990. Starring - Brian Krause – Charles - Return to the Blue Lagoon - Richard Lestrange 1991, Camel Spiders - Captain Mike Sturges 2011. Wendy-O-Williams - Plasmatics

The Plasmatics were an American punk metal band formed by Yale University art school graduate Rod Swenson with Wendy O. Williams. The band was a controversial group known for wild live shows that broke countless taboos. In addition to chainsawing guitars, blowing up speaker cabinets and sledgehammering television sets, Williams and the Plasmatics blew up automobiles live on stage.

Plasmatics were masters of capturing a post apocalyptic vibe. The video for “The Damned” produced and directed by The video Rod, features Wendy driving a school bus through a wall of TVs, climbing onto the roof of a moving bus which had been loaded with explosives, and then singing from the roof and jumping off a few moments before the bus goes through the second wall of TVs and then blows sky high.

VIDEO Lands

For many, it was a sad thing to see the many Blockbuster Video stores sit vacant, run out of business by Netflix and other on-demand services.  However, although unfortunate for a fan of analogue, I never shed a tear.  I had lived through the early days of the video store, before Blockbuster came in and drove many of the independent movie rental shops out of business.  For me, Blockbuster, Video Ezy and the like ruined things.  They didn’t have the character and uniqueness of the small, independently owned video stores.  So, the sight of an old Blockbuster building converted to a Get Fit Quick gym didn’t inspire much wistful sentiment.

So, this gallery of memories isn’t about the days of Blockbuster which owned the early 2000’s and essentially all of the 1990’s.  This is about the days when the video recorder was new, and there was excitement in the air – you could actually select a movie to watch yourself!  We take it for granted now; however, up until then, you were at the mercy of what was at the cinema or drive in (if you had one in your town ) or what ever the 3 telly stations decided to throw your way. Now, the power was in your quaking hands.  Oh, the thrill of this new technology…. And oh, the disappointments….
